Attention all Mitsuwa Fans

Especially those without cars.
Golden Palace Market has just opened up. It's on Broadway just north of the Dominicks at Berwyn & Broadway, so maybe 2.5 blocks north of Foster. It's a small Pan-Asian grocery store that seems to have a lot of the same kinds of things we go to Mitsuwa for: aisles of brightly-colored unidentifiable snack foods, odd-looking fish frozen whole, produce you can beat people over the head with, fruit drinks you have never heard of, and more kinds of noodles than you can shake a large radish at. As they are a grocery store only, they don't have the puzzling pink appliances or cream-filled endangered wildlife that you can find at Mitsuwa, but they have the advantage of being close by and very western-friendly. I got chatting with one of the clerks and mentioned our fondness for trying to puzzle out what some of the products were and how to cook them, and he laughed and said he'd be happy to explain any of them to us.
ashtalet, they have that soda with the little glass ball in it, as well as big bags of frozen (though not fresh) lychees. I got a bag of my favorite fishy-styrofoam chips, some packets of "honey ginger drink" (which seems to be a sweetened instant ginger tea), and a can of Winter Melon Tea. Winter Melon is apparently an extremely sweet fruit that tasted oddly of vanilla, honey, and spice. Not something I'd get hooked on, but it was interesting to try.
Stragely enough, there was no Pocky to be seen. However, as they were in the midst of their Grand Opening, there were still boxes lying around opened but not yet unpacked, so there is hope that one day soon there will be Pocky. And I was a bit too terrified to try the Malaysian coconut cracker sticks that looked like little maggots. But they did have my favorite kinds of instant miso and a truly amazing variety of ice creams like coconut, jack fruit, and at least four others I don't remember off hand.
So, it looks like a good place for a nifty-strange food fix without either paying Whole Foods prices or driving out to Arlington Heights.
