I always like watching the local news on major holidays. It's sort of a cross between seeing the understudy take the stage and watching the inmates take over the asylum!

All the anchors and reporters you usually see have enough seniority to take the day off, so you get the eager young space cadets. They aren't terribly polished, and there are usually a lot of technical issues, but it's fun to watch nonetheless. There are mispronounced names and strange camera angles, but everyone is pretty good humored about it. Somehow it seems more genuine than the slickly produced evening news we see most of the time.

Today is kind of grey and cold out - we may see either rain or flurries by evening. But I'm holed up with a variety of yummies and the rest of my LOTR marathon. I had pie for breakfast, and Pepper and I are sharing a pot of green tea. I think she'd rather have the pie.

Though I have to say I get a lot fewer assumptions that I'll be doing something holiday-ish on Christmas Day since my brother married a Jew. Mom does Christmas - out of habit I think - my brother and his wife do sort-of-Hannukah stuff, and I do Solstice. We all send prezzies to each other that get opened sometime in late December, and that's pretty much that.

Frankly I think John and Melissa probably celebrate BOTH Christmas and Hannukah because both are excuses to cook and share good food with friends. Both are gourmet cooks and total foodies, with an excessively wonderful kitchen. Of course, they probably celebrate Thursdays for much the same reason.

I'm kind of bummed, because my mom and her guy are visiting my brother and his wife, and no one bothered to invite me or even tell me about it until late last month. My mom's annual holiday letter had several paragraphs on her travels, a couple of lines about John and Melissa, and "Wendy adopted a lop-eared rabbit". It's great when your family is proud of you :(

It was a nice quiet day here - mostly involving a nice long nap and some computer maintenance. Cuz it's not like there is much else to do if you don't participate in the ancient Jewish tradition of "ordering Chinese food and going to the movies on Christmas Day". Pepper is busily demolishing a new wicker basket - pretty much the only thing-you-buy that she likes to play with. It's mostly to make up for the fact that she got her nails (mostly) trimmed last night. I still have to go back to get one more paw and 3 other nails - she's awfully wiggly and doesn't like it very much.
