Almost there
Mar. 11th, 2007 03:58 pmI confess I'd be happier if we were a little more polished at rehearsal this morning (the last full one before St. Pat's), but we're definitely within striking distance. Mostly it's arrangements that are tripping us up still - the transitions between instrumental tunes and stuff like that is still a little weak, but a quick pickup runthru on Thursday should sort that out nicely.
I'm in as good vocal shape as I could hope to be. I'm just glad that this is a miked gig, as I don't quite have my power back yet. I was noticably short of breath at a couple of points today, but it was the first day at the stepped-down steriod dosage (40mg from 60) so I'm still adjusting. I stay on this dosage thru Saturday, so I should be acustomed to it by then. But it's not just me. Our intrepid woodwinder and would-be-singer asked "my throat is a little sore and my diaphragm hurts. That's good, right?" Yeah it is - means you're using muscles you need to develop. I'm hoping that once things calm down for a bit after this gig we can take some time to do some more specifically vocal tech coaching with the new folks. Learning basic stuff now and pounding the fundemantals will stand them in really good stead as we go on. Much easier to learn it right than have to relearn stuff.
We've all worked our butts off these last few weeks, and I couldn't be prouder of everyone. Stuff isn't perfect, but no one has slacked off at all. Everyone has worked on the stuff they said they would, and we're really starting to pull together as a group. I can wave my hand at someone and say "do something here", and they DO - and it's really GOOD! When it works, I have to poke the goosebumps back into my skin. I'll be lucky if I simply don't fly off the stage during "John Ryan's Polka".
After rehearsal I went to get some supplies for the new sign, and to get a haircut. Almost all my perm is gone, but I wanted to perk up the red before the gig - and I'm gonna try highlights too. Finishing off a nice nutritious late lunch (english muffin with tuna salad and a cup of homemade chicken bean soup). Mmmmm - protein good. It's again just over 50 degrees out so I've got the windows open, and then I'm for a nap!
