wendyzski: (Pepper)
Pepper made a new bestest friend today. She is a large elderly female Chow mix dog named Bear.

I took Pepper out in her pen tonight, and even got her into her harness for her first excursion on a leash. OMG she LUVS it! I'm going to need a longer lead. I look away for an instant and she's off again. I certainly got as much exercise as she did.

Well, once she was out EVERYONE else decided to come out and visit. The chihuahuas Buttercup and BW were first on the scene, then Bear came out. She was clearly fascinated by Pepper, and her approach was slow enough not to freak her out. Butters and BW were a bit much, but when ANOTHER chi named Brandy came out, that was too much for Pepper. She growled and boxed at Brandi, then turned and started to go afetr BW, so I brought her back into her pen to calm down. Apparently big calm dogs are ok, but hyper yappy ones are not.

I sat with her in the pen to pluck off a bunch of loose undercoat fur and to generally pet and keep an eye on her. I even hung my blanket up over one side of the pen, so she had a place away from the extreme dogginess.

This is where the major cute began.

Bear came and laid down next to the outside of the pen. She was sniffing and nosing at Pepper, and clearly wanted her new little friend to play. Pepper nosed back but generally ignored her - I think she was edging towards overload at that point so I was petting her head and offering her clover. Once she settled and started grooming I worried less. She even hopped to another section of the pen to nibble a particularly tasty bit of grass. Bear followed her, and lay down next to THAT side of the cage. (Clearly the funny-looking little dog didn't want to play right now, but maybe they could just hang out together). She even licked Pepper's head a couple of times. This went on for about 15 minutes more, till a couple more dogs came out and the excited barking had Pepper flattened down in the grass and I figured she'd had enough.

As I packed up everything to go inside, Bear kept sniffing around - not being pushy, just sort of ambling but clearly still interested in the bunbun. I went to go back inside, and Bear followed us to the door. I had a bit of trouble keeping her from following us inside, and as I started up the stairs Bear was still standing outside and watching through the glass. ("where is my little friend going?")

I put everything away and came back down ten route to the laundromat. Bear was still outside, and came right up to me. She sniffed me all over and then sniffed my laundry cart, and looked underneath it, then back at me. I could almost hear "But where is the bunny?". Awwww.
