Marcon panels (Subject to change)
May. 2nd, 2008 01:53 pmAccording to the initial version of the pocket program, I'm on 5 panels. Add to that the fact that I plan to enter the Masquerade, and you see why I keep telling people "let me check my schedule first" when they want to meetup.
Interestingly, I'm on 3 costume panels which are all on Friday, and then one each cross-genre panel on Saturday and Sunday.
Friday 4:00 PM - How To Strut Your Stuff (Masquerade Presentation) with the lovely
redkendrad and someone else I'm not sure I know - but I will by the end of the evening as they are also on the next 2 panels!
Friday 8:30 PM - What Makes a Winning Masquerade Entry (which I'm on with 2/3 of this year's judges AND I plan to enter this year. No pressure or anything.....) Need to find my
Rule of Six" listing.
Friday 10:00 PM - Costume and Kink:Fetish Influence on Media Costumes. (When I signed up it didn't say "media" in the title, and I just sent off an e-mail to programming expressing concern that we could fill 45 minutes if we limit to "media", and suggesting either a slight title change or an additional panelist. Right now there are 3 and one is more of a writer than a costumer)
Saturday 11:30 - The Net's Effect on Fandom - this is actually a subject I have thought much about - 'OK now you can find the other 37 people on the planet that are into the obscure short story author you are, but does that mean that you no longer hang out with LOTR costumers you know?' Always an interesting thing to discuss.
Sunday 2:30 - Creativity vs Commerce - another subject dear to my heart. Just the other night I said to
woody_whistler "Yeah, that's a classic example of an Elizabethan Street Ballad, but is it really going to play to the 'Titties and Beer' crowd?"
So I could do dinner on Friday if it's in the food court, a late lunch on Saturday, or Sunday brunch.

Looptopia in the rain
May. 2nd, 2008 08:46 pmBetween my aching ankle and it's opposing aching kneee I didn't stay as late at Looptopia as I'd liked.
Went to the "Fairy Tales/Circus Arts" show, which was cool. The fairy tale frame was prelly lame, but the acts were interesting and pretty skilled. It was in the same space that
woody_whistler is performing at in a few hours so I called him and warned him about the dirt/dust. It's kind of a construction/warehouse space so I suggested that he bring some wetnaps and something to sit on.
There was also a slideshow of photos of "Superhero Fans" in costume, from the Superman fest. I'm pretty sure that one of the photos was Leman's husband (whose name I can never remember) so I stayed through the rotation twice and I still think so.
I caught a couple of the performance art installations in the windows at Macys (and interacted with one for a bit - the red one with the books), and some nice piano music at Daley Plaza. I had planned to go early to the Riverwalk and sit to eat my sandwich so that I'd be in place when the fire-spinners started. But then the skies opened up and my umbrella blew inside out. So I limped back up to street level and caight a couple of rather damp and chilled-looking street installations.
One was really interesting - a woman enshrouded in white fabric on a white platform. You couldn't see through the material but you could see the figure inside moving, and there was an opening from which an arm or leg would emerge and contort before disappearing inside again. She seemed rather dark-skinned and slender, so the contrast between the rounded white shape and the angularity of the limb was striking. She was even managing to work the 'holding the umbrella with (presumably) the other hand' into her performance. Weirdly beautiful and slightly creepy.
But that was about all I could take, and the weather wasn't improving. So I stopped into Broders to picku up a couple of things I didn;t know were out, and then headed home. Wish I'd been able to stay later - I had such a good time last year.
