so....steampunk?
Feb. 23rd, 2009 12:28 pmIt's the theme for Windycon in Nov and I've been (somewhat vigorously) requested to do panels there.
Problem is that I pretty much missed the whole steampunk bandwagon and have only a nodding familiarity with Victorian clothing in general. Anyone have any links offhand that do "steampunk for dummies"? I plan to do a bit of lurking on steamfashion for a bit.
I was brainstorming last night and I came up with an idea for a prop that I could then build a costume around. I've also been rereading Simon R. Green's Nightside books as be is author GOH at Marcon and I was looking for a character of his that I could do. I think I've settled on Bad Penny (death in high heels). But there are also characters called The Hollow Men, and there is a description of one having hypodermic needles for fingers, and I confess that image freaked me the f*ck out.
So I have been batting around ideas for a sort of clockwork/pneumatic version of a glove with needles for fingernails. I have all those small plastic syringes from Pepper's medications, and I could trim and paint them an attach them to the fingers of a glove. I could make the needles from metal hairbrush bristles which have the little plastic blob on them so I can't piss off the weapons policy police. I have the idea of running tubes/wires/etc to clear chambers (with colored liquid inside - maybe even lit with led or glow-pods) on the back of the hand or on a wrist cuff and another set running to a sort of clockwork-looking control button/dial set into the palm of the glove, so that it looks nasty and functional.
I could then design a costume around that item. Because all good Gentleman/woman Adventurers need a nemesis, I was thinking some kind of villain for hire, like some of the Nightside characters - you send her after someone to bring them in or take them out. Classy but a bit tattered, living and/or working more around the Jack-The-Ripper side of gaslight fantasy. Miss Morphine or something like that.
