seed starting for dummies>
Apr. 26th, 2009 04:51 pmAs I suspected, I managed to dry out-overwater my first attempt at a seedling tray. About half of them sprouted and then the only thing to thrive was a particularly indestructible form of spinach.
So today I scrapped the whole thing. I transplanted the little spinaches into a windowbox and wish them well, but clearly I need to start this thing over again with a somewhat better idea of what I'm doing.
I have seeds for a greens mix, a mesclun mix, some funky-colored carrots and some marigolds. I have one of those plastic tray setups, with the little plastic wells and the tray underneaty for watering and the clear plastic cover.
Once I start up again, does anyone have any hints or links for a clueless but well-meaning newbie?
(The things I bought as plants - the herbs and greens - are doing wonderfully on their diet of weekly watering and bunny poop. It's just this getting-started phase that I can't seem to manage.)
On a positive note, I stopped by the garden center today and got some lemon thyme and some sage with a pretty varigated leaf, and then some disco-mix marigolds. All of those went into the hanging baskets, cuz I figure you don't get more "well-drained soil" than that!
