Best Story from Stronghold Faire
Oct. 7th, 2010 08:49 pmIt was again a lovely weekend, terribly busy days of a show pretty much every hour on the hour interspersed with bunny-cuddling (A very important job you know) and evenings of great silliness with friends (This year's a'cappella triumph was Bohemian Rhapsody in 17 part harmony and 3 different keys). But I had to share this bit of amusement that had me giggling all weekend.
In the past they lined up the people for the castle tours in the courtyard. Since that always meant annoying annoucements over the sets of the performers there, and since they got rid of the old kids stage that no one ever knew was there, this year they ran the castle lines back up the hill towards the faire entrance.
Now, when you enter the faire there is a ticket booth at the top of the hill and then you follow a rather winding but pleasant road down to the faire site itself. I had gone back up the hill to our dorm to get my gloves, and decided to take the road rather than the short-cut back down. I was walking among people who were first entering the faire.
So I watched as people came down the road, and saw the line for the castle tours winding back up the hill at the side of the road. I watched as no less than 3 groups of people came down, saw the line, and apparently said "Oh, a line" and promptly got in line.
I thought this a bit odd, so I walked up to them and said "Excuse me, is this the line for the Castle tours?"
Random person: "I don't know"
Me: Hrm. "Well, what is this line for, then?"
Random person: "Umm, *looks around* we don't know".
As Her Royal
seamstrix commented later "How very English of them!"
Me: "Let me get this straight. You're in a line and you don't know why?"
Other random person: "Ummmm..."
So I went to the front of the line, and asked if it was indeed the line for the castle tours. They confirmed that it was, and I suggested that they send somoene to the back of the line to tell people what it was they were actually in line for.
Later in the day I was telling the story, and one of the minor courtiers commented that he had noticed that there seemed to be an awful lot of people touring the castle first thing in the morning this year. Now we know why.
Baaa-aaaaaaa.....
