Update on yesterday's entry
Apr. 5th, 2011 03:11 pmA lot has been happening overnight on the Wicked Pretty Things front.
LAST NIGHT:
There was a brief WTF last night when apparently the publisher or editor (it gets very hard to sort out at times) sent a 'please come back" letter to all the authors who had pulled their stories from WPT. It included a quote from Saundra Mitchell - who immediately responded via Twitter "For any author who got the "Please come back to our anthology" letter from R&P I DIDN'T authorize that quote and my story remains withdrawn!".
THIS MORNING
Saundra posted ""I am pleased to say that they have retracted my quote from their letter and offered a wholehearted apology, which I have accepted. On that front, at least, I feel that they've behaved admirably and I thank them for that."
The editor and both publishers (US and UK) have issued apologies for what happened. Jessica Verday, the author whose story precipitated this entire chain of events has posted on her blog today that while she appreciates the apologies (which she posted in their entirety) and appreciates the offer to publish her story in the anthology as is, she has chosen not to take that course of action.
I can understand her actions. I have actually read the standard contract that was used for this anthology over at
cleolinda 's blog and each author gets a flat $250 for their story. Royalties on the sales go to the editor - the authors only get some form of royalties if the work is translated into other languages. So she has decided that she really doesn't want to basically go make money for someone who took actions that she feels very hurt by . As we all know - apologies are really good things but they don't make everything all better.
I support her and her decision. I support those authors who stood up and pulled their stories, and I also will support any that choose to accept RP's apologiy and allow their stories to be included. Because these are all artists who had the courage to take a stand when they didn't know how it would be responded to. They didn't do it for money, or for internet buzz - they did it because it was something they believed in - that this sort of thing is Just Not OK.
For the record, here is a handy shopping list of those authors, with links
Jessica Verday
Lesley Livington
Karen Mahoney
Lisa Mantchev
Brenna Yovanoff
Seanan McGuire
are the ones who pulled out of WPT.
Saundra Mitchell has pulled out of another anthology by that editor but still supports Running Press because she has a great relationshop with another editor associated with them.
Go look them up and buy a book or two. If you're already a fan, turn a friend on to their work. Because they make me feel good about making art and making a difference.
