*How* screwed up were the records when you got there, and just how much work did you have to do to get them straightened out again?
Dig deep enough into this and I'll bet you a steak dinner you'll find out that someone above you *hadn't* been doing their job; getting rid of you was the easiest way to play damage control, and try to keep the upper management from finding out about it.
