But you have to admit that the Anita Blake novels have changed a bit since #1. I still buy and read them, but it's not quite the same series I started reading.
Proven Guilty is the second book in the Harry Dresden Hardcovers. 1-5 are in paperback, and hence cheaper and maybe a better intro to the character. In order is nice but not necessary - I think I started with #6 from the library. 1-5 are also available as 2 omnibus hardcovers from the SFBC.
