Would I need to know anything about Doctors 1-8?

I know what a Tardis is, and a Sonic Screwdriver, and I met one of the actors at a con but can't remember which one.

It's helpful if you do, but since RTD (Russell T. Davies) envisioned this as a new beginning for the series, most everything gets explained to the point that you will understand what's going on.
