Because so many people want cut bunny stories - even some folks not on my F-list (nothing personal - just that I can only read so many LJs in a day) that I will continue to post Pepper-bunny stories here.

So here is...
The Well-Traveled Bunny
The Well-Traveled Bunny
I took Pepper with me to a science-fiction convention this weekend because I needed to keep up with her meds schedule. It made for an interesting experience...

I made a folding gate-thingie out of leftover NIC cubes, a temporary litterbox made from a shoebox lined in plastic, a couple of things-to-bang-around, a bag of hay, and food & water.

First, it was "Take Your Bunny To Work Day". My office is pet-friendly (we have a little dachshund who regularly visits) but as we are an IT company there are LOTS of wires about. Luckily we are in a converted condo building so there was a large shower stall available to stash her in. She was a good little bunny, alternating between napping and bangin a plastic cup around. Everyone thought she was very cute.

We have taken public transport before, but I didn't want to try and manage a crowded and noisy downtown subway with luggage AND a bunny with an infected ear, so I booked us for the airport shuttle. She clearly does not like being in her carrier, but was pretty calm - and even turned to face me - yay she knows the sound of my voice!

Got to the airport around 7 and set her up in the corner between my bed and the windows. Access to under-the-bed was blocked off by a barrier 1 grid high while the rest was 2-grids high. Got her settled in and then went to get my badge and then come back and unpack - that wasy she could have some time to settle before I had to give her the Oti-Rinse. She hid for a bit but was soon sniffling about.

She dealt very well with the hordes of visitors - EVERYONE wanted to come up and meet the bunny. I think she probably had more fans than some of the official convention Guests! When I decided to go upstairs, I would take a swing through the lobby to see if I saw anyone who had expressed interest, and then took them up to the room with me.

Got her all doesd for the day and then headed off to the room parties. When I got back to the room around 12:45AM I found that she wasn't in her pen! She had managed to get behind the curtain and use it as a lever to push the gate aside and get out around the window! The tale of my trying to retreive her from under my roomates' bed without waking them and using only the light of my cellphone made for great storytelling. I got her back in and secured and went to bed.

The next day was much the same - I would let her out to run around the room for about 30 minutes at a time when we had visitors, and otherwise let her chill out in the room. It sure was a LOT easier to wrangle her at ear-drop time when she is penned in!

I was the MC for the evening masquerade and then again wandered the hospitality suite and the parties with friends until about 3AM. I got back to the room and she wasn't in her pen again! I checked all the obvious points of possible exit and all were secure. Once again I retreived her from under the roomies' bed and popped her back in the pen. Started taking off my shoes and I heard a noise - she was UP ON THE BED - one of those higher-than-usual hotel beds! She preened for a moment and then disappeared under the bed again. Realizing that there was no way I was going to be able to either recapture or confine her without waking everyone up, I decided to simply arrange things so that she could access the pen area (and the litterbox) from under the bed and went to sleep hoping for the best.

I was awakened by hopeful whiskers on my face. "Mom - pellets? Is it time for pellets? Pellets?" So I fed her and dosed her and tried to get back to sleep. As the roomies awakend I mumbled "bunny is loose" and went back to sleep. Once everyone was awake I cleaned up a bit and headed down to breakfast. A few more groups of visitors later it came time to pack up. She was a little interested in some of the electrical cords under the desk, but only when strangers were in the room, and a few well-timed foot-interceptions kept those safe.

Oh - almost forgot...In the process of wandering about Saturday night/Sunday morning, Pepper
apparently got up on the chair I had been using to pile her stuff on. She found the small ziplock baggie of raisins that I had brought as good-bunny-bribes for taking her medicine, and decided that it needed to be in a safer place.

When I located her on Sunday morning, she was stretched out under my bed with the chewed-through bag and the raisins piled neatly between her forepaws, like a little sphinx. She was NOT happy when I retrieved first them and then her!

Once late check-out time came I pretty much had to head for home, because I didn't want her to have to hang out in her carrier too long. Made a quick round of the hallways for a last couple of "OOoooo! A Bunny - Let me see the bunny!"s and got on the bus. Took a little over an hour to get home, and once let out she went straight into her condo. She handled it like a little trooper, but was definitely glad to be home.

Next time? Well, I want her to be used to her harness and lead before I take her on a trip again, so that I can take her out to be admired. I also think that it would be easier to pen over the wires rather than pen in the bunny. She isn't a furniture- or curtain-chewer and she has great litterbox habits, so I think this might be a better strategy for us. Your mileage may vary.

Next time (It's not my story but you will like it)...Bunny On A Plane!
