OK - Since I knew that the days of analog TV are numbered, I decided that I'd get a DVDR that had a digital tuner - thus saving me having to get the box-y thing in a year or so.

Now I live in the city and I do not have cable, thought I do have an amplified antenna. Even so, I have some spotty picture issues.

No more!

Most of the local stations are simulcasting their regular programming in digital format - there really is no comparison between the two. The digital picture is clear and bright. Some channels are even broadcasting additional content in digital format as well - ABC has a sort of "headline news" thing with a weather crawl and talking head format. And now I have FOUR PBS STATIONS!!! A huge PBS geek like myself will be twitching over this for DAYS at least. (Now I have to figure out how to find out what is gonna be on these things...)

Some of the digital channels are HD, which comes out in a slightly smaller picture on my old TV. Still, it's so clear that I don't think I'll mind much.

In theory, I'll also be able to watch one channel and record another one, which is bound to come in handy someplace.

And best of all - I spent $26 more than insurance paid me for my old one, and I can recover $20 of that with appropriate documentation.

(BTW - This is a Panasonic model that is on sale at Target this week for $170)

Haven't tried to actually record anything with it yet - that will be this weekend when I try to record 'Masters of Science Fiction' while I'm in Michigan.

BTW - you used to say that you were going to "tape" something when recording it on a VCR. People who have Tivos say they "Tivo'd" something. What do I say when I record something to DVD? "I'm gonna 'Disc' it?"
