When I was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma at age 12, the doc told me to cut back on sports and otherwise "tough it out" because "it's not serious enough for an inhaler". Until then I was a halfback on the soccer team and a regular sprint medalist at the town's Fourth of July games.

Sophomore year of college I came home from fencing class and was coughing and wheezing as usual, and someone handed me their inhaler. I used it before class the next day, then came home and did a little "OMG IT DOESN'T HURT TO BREATHE" dance! Then marched to my allergist and demanded one of my very own.

As recently as last winter I was unable to walk more than 1/2 block on a flat surface without wheezing, had to rest twice on the way up to my 2nd floor apartment, and was virtually trapped in my apartment all winter because even with a scarf the cold dry air triggered attacks every time I walked outside.
