Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters is the latest offering from Quirk Books, publisher of the classic Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Sadly, though it is shown in the trailer, Willoughby is not in fact drowned in a lake by an enraged cephalopod. I find myself of the opinion that such a scene would have greatly benefitted either this work or that of Miss Austen.

Unlike P&P&Z, this work strays much further from Austen's original text - which is all to the good as far as I am concerned. One issue I had with that book (well, aside from an insufficient number of quality ninjas) was that in it's attempts to retain much of the original work it had long slow passages. S&S&SM retains only the character names, traits and overall story arc but is clearly much more willing to toss anything overboard that would get in the way of a ripping good story.

The family of Dashwood had been settled in Sussex since before the Alteration, when the waters of the world grew cold and hateful to the sons of man and darkness moved on the face of the earth.

Since the Alteration (which no one seems to know the exact cause), people of fashion are attempting to live out their lives in spite of the fact that all the creatures of the sea are actively seeking to destroy them. People are forever being consumed by sand-shambling jellyfish while at picnics, or being rescued from octopi in small creeks. The Misses Dashwood live on the Pestilent Isle after their father is devoured by a hammerhead shark. Edward Ferrers loves Miss Elinor dreams only of becoming a country lighthouse keeper (with a large lake and only one or two serpents to monitor) but his mother would prefer he wed Miss Morton, heir to the late builder/designer of Submarine Station Alpha. Marianne is rescued from a voracious octopus by the timely arrival of Willoughby, a treasure-hunter with well-fitted wetsuit and a valet named Monsieur Pierre who happens to be an orangutan. Colonel Brandon labors under the memories of his lost love, and the curse of a sea-witch that has left him with a complete set of facial tentacles. And only young Margaret heard the mysterious drums and semi-human voices chanting from the caves near the mysterious steaming mountain...

This is a delightful piece of fluff - it doesn't make a lick of sense and isn't the slightest but ashamed of it. It has pirates, hyperintelligent mutant lobsters, kidnapped native maidens, eldritch horrors, and pretty much anything else you need and a plate of chip-flavored algae-paste (Well, food is expensive to transport to Submarine Station Beta)

I can highly recommend this one!
