Random thoughts from this weekend
Sep. 6th, 2006 02:10 pmThe wonder-sunscreen I was talking about was Banana Boat Sport Continuous Spray.
It was lovely to have a place to go barefoot in the grass!
The water at our hotel was crunchy. I just kept pretending that it was expensive mineral water. The well water on site was just fine.
The Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher are (paperbacks) Storm Front, Fool Moon, Grave Peril, Summer Knight, Death Masks, Blood Rights, (hardcover) Dead Beat and Proven Guilty. They are very similar in tone to the early (pre-porm) Anita Blake novels - Supernatural whodunnits with a wicked sense of humor.

Sep. 6th, 2006 10:58 pmIntroducing Anabelle Lee!

This sweet lop girl will be coming home with me on Sunday.
"Underneath that ladylike name, Annabelle Lee is smart and sassy. She likes people and loves to have freedom to explore."
I met a total of three bunnies - all were certainly nice enough but AL seemed to take to me right away. Since I am educated about buns but not experienced, it was important to me that I find one who is comfy enough with me to forgive my occasional awkwardness.
Courtney is a shy grey English spot mix who has been at the shelter for a long time. I feel kind of bad that we didn't get along, but she kept giving me the bunny butt, even after a bribe of fresh lettuce.
Scarlet is a lavender-eyed white, and we got on great once she warmed up to me. I got nudges even without a food bribe, and was almost decided on her. But they told me they had one more to show me.
Annabelle Lee (named for a volunteer's first childhood pet) was really grumpy when they first brought her in - she's in mid-shed and was being plucked out just before she came in. It took her quite a while to come over to me, even with the parseley. But once she decided I was OK, she was very friendly. She loves pets and nudges, is very curious, and even stretched out to chill for a while next to me. TWICE! (That is a sign of a very comfy and relaxed bunny). That was what decided it - not so much that I liked her but that she liked me.
They showed me how to trance her and clipped her nails for me - they weren't long, just pointy. They also showed me how to put in the ear drops I'm supposed to give her every month - since their ears hang down lops can be prone to ear infections. So the poor thing got plucked, nail-clipped AND ear-stuff. Poor baby.
She's a transfer from Chicago Animal Care and Control, and is about 8 months old now. She's been spayed and microchipped, and won't need a checkup until year's end. I'll be taking her to the same vet the shelter uses, and I'm getting a full copy of her vet records when I pick her up on Sunday.
I'm SOOO Excited! I have a tub of hay and have ordered some tools and supplies. I need to get a litterbox and a carrier, and put together the cage and stuff this week. Then I'll go pick her up early Sunday afternoon, and then she can have some quiet time to settle in her new home while I'm at rehearsal.
Sad note though - when I got to the shelter I noticed a small carrier outside the door. I told the staff and they found that someone had abandoned a skinny little cat - all I saw was a white face and pink nose. The note with her said she was 16 years old (!), but she was sick and dehydrated, and she may be in renal failure. It is unlikely that she will make it. A little prayer for the little old cat-lady and if she must go to the Rainbow Bridge let it be swift and painless.
