For those who believe in choice
Jul. 16th, 2008 02:06 pmThe Bush administration is poised to release a rule that will make it possible for federal funding that is specifically designed to prevent unintended pregnancy and promote reproductive health to now be used for anything but that. It would permit some of these funds to be released to "crisis pregnancy centers" that you see advertised on the 'el. Women who go to these centers are not given complete information on the choices available to them but are instead steered towards "options" that suit a particular ideology.
This rule also would allow pharmacists the right to refuse to fill birth control prescriptions based on their beliefs that they are "wrong". Never mind that you might need hormone regulation for a medical reason - but even if you want them for birth control, WHO THE HELL CARES? You and your doctor, and perhaps your partner. No one else. Illinois has a law prohibiting this kind of thing, but this new rule would almost certainly challenge or even trump that. A quick search of the blogosphere will turn up many incidents where women were denied Plan B because of the ideological hangups of a pharmacist or physician.
(I know I could be phrasing this kind of thing better, but I'm too pissed off to re-formulate a proper argument)
Anyway, if you support the right of women to informed choice and assistance with family planning , please go here and make your voice heard.
