protesting
Nov. 14th, 2008 11:07 amI've written letters, I've signed petitions, but I've never been to a protest in my life.
That's going to change tomorrow.
There is a nationwide protest taking place tomorrow against the passing of Prop8. There will be protests in all 50 states at the same time. Chicago's is at 12:30 local time starting at the corner of Adams and Dearborn.
I printed up a sign (that I'll tape to some cardboard) that has a border of stars, a picture of a wedding ring, and "And Justice For All" in big red letters. On the back I'll have another one that reads "The sky didn't fall in Massachusetts!" and clip art of some meteors.
Typical me - I'm going to be righteous AND snarky at the same time.
I'm also looking for my button that reads "straight but not narrow".
I'm kind of nervous, but they seem to be very concerned that this be a peaceful and respectful event, because screaming won't change anyone's opinion. But being loud and visible and saying in public that this kind of thing is NOT acceptable is important.
Personally I think that the government should stay out of the whole marriage thing. But since that's not likely to happen, then if they are involved everyone gets to play. I was a legal witness on
jmthane's and
tarsa's marriage certificate (which throught a legal loophole may be perfectly valid).
Wish me luck. I'll try not to get arrested.
