Twilight

For those of you living under rocks, there is this series of YA vampire romance novels (but with no sex just longing pls) that are insanely popular with teenage girls. The first one is being made into a movie opening next week, the stars have been on the Tour of Terror (video of a recent event with the male lead shows him wandering around the stage unable to even say anything over the constant tween screaming) and I've been having SO much fun snarking along with cleolinda that I decided that I really had to try and read these things to see what all the fuss was about (and so that I had the basis for many future snarky essays). I found free .pdfs kindly uploaded online because i'm not going to PAY for this experience, an loaded the first one into my Palm.

OMG these are awful.

I'm on chapter 5 and apparently they were written by a 15 year-old with a thesaurus and a big jar of commas! The female lead is pale and perfect (except for clumisness, because you HAVE to give your characters a flaw - I saw it in a book somewhere), smarter and wiser than everyone - also similarly inexplicably popular with boys that she selflessly rejects blah blah - The term "Mary Sue" doesn't even BEGIN to describe it.

Of course we all know that vampires are always beautiful. But these don't burn up in the sun - they "sparkle" . Yeah - I'm really TRYING to ignore that part. And the prose - don't get me started. "He turned to look me straight in the face,utilizing the full power of his burning gold eyes." AAAAAARGH *stabs self with #2 pencil*

Oh - and I've not showered yet today, and looking in the mirror have decided that I am channeling Robert Pattinson's hair.
