While I had to be home by 5 just in case, the RCN tech showed up a little after 7.
I have to say I was impressed - problem was diagnosed and corrected in under 5 minutes, and then he spent some more time showing me how to check on the issue in the future by bookmarking a site that runs a speed and signal check.
Seems my signal was too good :)
I'm paying for and my modem is set for one speed and I was getting a significantly stronger signal. This was periodically overloading the modem, which is why sometimes power-cycling the equipment fixed the issue and sometimes it didn't. It has it's own internal check schedule, which also corrected the issue SOME of the time. All of this goes together to explain why my access has been going on and off at random intervals for no apparent reason. IF the reset happened to take when the signal fluctuated in the right direction, then all was well.
So he installed a thingamabob between the wall cable and the modem, and all is well.
I also have a list of a whole bunch of values that the diagnostic is SUPPOSED to show and what it means if they are waaaay off.
So yay!
