This morning

We have extreme wind chill warnings from about mid-day today until noonish on Friday. Wind chills tonight will be well below zero and even without the wind we're not getting above zero tomorrow. This is pretty typical for the 2md or 3rd week of January, which is usually the coldest around here. We have about 15" of snow on the ground and may get another 2-4 tonight and tomorrow. It's really been insanely snowy this season.

So when I left for work this morning, I was wearing

• usual undies
• leggings
• jeans
• cotton socks (2 pairs)
• insulated snow boots
• pullover short-sleeved sweater (my office is warm)
• heavy Irish wool zip cardigan
• scarf
• down parka
• one of those doofy hats with the furry ear flaps
• mittens AND gloves

All together for that wonderful "Calvin in a snowsuit" look (I can't put my arms down!) and I'm sure I was taking up more room than usual on the bus.

The streets looked slushy but fine and my usual busses were on time, but once we hit Lake Shore Drive we just pretty much stopped. I was on the left (east) side of the bus so I mostly couldn't see out the salt/dirt covered window anyway, and what I could see was acres of snow-covered park with no recognizable landmarks. I ended up calling the office at 8:58 to say "Hi - I'm on a bus somewhere on LSD and I'll be there when I get there". Managed to get in around 9:15.
