Why have my USB ports stopped working?

They worked last week!

I've not been able to synch my Palm up since the 6th but wasn't too worried about it. But now I checked everything and it's all connected where it ought to be, and I even switched devices around from one port to the other (I have two). Still nuthin. I can't add stuffs to my MP3 player and I can't synch my Palm.

Help Mee!!!

if your running windows, it's possible that your usb subsystem is messed up and it's a simple software issue. It's been a long time since I even used windows but what you can try is boot into safe mode and in the device manager remove all the usb device entries and then reboot your system and let windows redetect things. A major caution though is if you have a usb keyboard and mouse this could break your computer really bad (as in not being able to click ok and stuck with a useless computer and losing all your data) also I have seen where windows asks to see the windows install cd when it redects the usb ports.

I'm only guessing that this may be whats wrong, more information would be helpful like what version of windows your running (assuming your running windows) 98 98se NT 2000 XP XPsp2? what devices are and are not working, do you have any devices that charge by the usb ports and are they infact charging or lighting up? (possible dead usb ports)

everytime I've seen windows go from one day a usb device was working to all of a sudde it's not and hardware has been verified ok it's been a simple matter of making windows "forget" that the device had ever been assiociated with the computer (yes this can be the usb ports themselves) and then reinstall of the device.

sorry about such a long reply but I'm trying to cover all the angles so as to not make a bad situation worse.

OK - have Windows XP. My Palm (in one port) a 4part hub with MP3 player, printer, external CD burner and scanner in the other. The external CD burner is powering fine off USB power, and the MP3 player shows its usual "I'm connected" screen, but the computer doesn't agree with it.

My keyboard and mouse are NOT usb, so your uninstall and reinstall option is possible - if I can't come up with anotehr idea I'll try it on Saturday.

Thankls again for the help - I'm a pretty good end-user, and can often get myself re-oriented with a poke in the right direction.

Had this happen to me not long ago. I fiddled around in systems manager and managed to get my also windows xp machine to re-identify the usb ports and reload the configs...if you haven't gotten headway by Saturday I'll try and recreate my steps.

I had re-installed windows some months ago and lost usb ports. Then I had acquired svl devices like the camera and needed to figure it out. I did. I'll try to write it out for you.

posting it here for reference for you

accesories, system tools.. then system restore.. restore it to a date when you know the usb ports were working...

it is certainly worth a try and something good to know about on days when the puter is being annoying...
