[livejournal.com profile] 3stitches, who has friended me for no apparent reason, but we know a couple of the same people in MN

On Wednesday, March 1st, 2006, in Annapolis at a hearing on the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at AU, was requested to testify.

At the end of his testimony, Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs said: "Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?"

Raskin replied: "Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."

The room erupted into applause.

That's "bad old man," thank you very much. Of course, coming from her anyone old enough to legally drink could be considered old. She's an impertinent young woman (or sometimes a not-so-worldly but well-intentioned young man, depending on whether or not she's Will). But thanks for the compliments. Flattery will get you lamb.

WendyZ, pleased to meet you. I friended you, IIRC, because you said some interesting things in response to a couple of Rilla's posts a while back and I figured you'd be an interesting read, and I haven't been disappointed.
