Boy, does this sound familiar. My dad used to run the R&D department for a processed meat company. When he passed the test to get his Professional Engineer certification on top of his PhD in Chemical Engineering, he became not only overqualified for his job, but his boss's boss's job. Shortly thereafter, he became unemployed. And at his age at that time, everyone told him he was "overqualified" for whatever jobs he applied to; in other words, too old.
He had the knowledge to do the job, and then some. He didn't have the people skills to play office politics.
