Marcon recap
Not really, but it sure sounded better than "cut cuz I'm Wordy McWorderson"
After about an hour delay I arrived in Columbus and shuttled to the hotel. Lost most of my naptime, so I grabbed a quick shower and headed down to the Green Room to get my materials and check my schedule. Had about an hour to wander before my 5:30 panel.
Ran into some of the Fyberdyne guys in the Dealers Room - they weren't there for the con but for a big party that is always held Friday Night. Was nice to see them for a bit.
From Page To Stage - Friday afternoon panels are always a crapshoot. We had 7-8 people in the audience, so I did my usual 30-40 minutes of on-topic material and then shifted to asking the people what costume ideas THEY were having trouble with and having the panel brainstorm on them.
That is really what I love most about Marcon - having a chance to brainstorm and BS with other costumers. There is a lot of creativity out there, and there are always people who know stuffs I don't. Two panels I was at ended up with sizeable digressions about glues - what adhesives are best for what purposes and what materials. Alas, my schedule meant that I missed most of the panels by the Costume GOH Chris Kramer. I know nothing about pneumatics or anodizing aluminum, but it would have been cool to learn. I kept referring to him as "the most famous man at the con that no one recognizes" - since he is always in some huge big-head or mask thing.
After the panel, I dropped down to Gaming to say Hi to the Kentucky boys. Peter Beer-Slayer has shaved his head since ConGlomeration, and I spent the weekend not-recognizing him. Helped haul the Tubs 'O SJ Games up to their room in exchange for some truly excellent mead (the 'Redneck Rennies' sure know how to show a girl a good time) and a chance to help/hinder wrapping Chris up in his very first kilt. Apparently he's now single and kin of mopey about it, so we did what all good friends should do in such a case - harass the hell out of him and then try to get him laid. Don't know if we succeeded, but he seemed to perk up a bit on Saturday….
Friday parties were a mixed bag - mostly loud/smokey/lacking in seating. Ended up settling for most of the evening in the Monty Python party. It was run by guys in really amazing Holy Grail Knight outfits serving nummy drinks and it wasn't too loud to talk. They also had rigged up a plush Vorpal Bunny on a fishing line so you could pull it up to the wall and send it flying across the room! Luckily I was short enough to only get my hair tickled as it went by, but I witnessed some guys getting bonked in the noggin before we managed to break the thing and left poor bunny dangling awkwardly from the light fixture.
Because Iron Costumer was scheduled for "Stupid O'Clock" the next day, I only had 3 drinks and cut myself off at 2AM. But we all ended up sitting around yakking for a while so I have no idea how much sleep I actually got.

Hit the Dealer's room again after IC, partly to walk off the adrenaline rush, and partly because I was so exhausted that if I lay down I'd end up missing half the con!. It's odd how many people there don't recognize me in a T-shirt and jeans - I'm SO not build for modern clothing. I just look saggy in modern dress. Anyway, grand total haul from Dealers included a Folkwear pattern, a button, some jewelry findings, and a couple of books. Got Beer-Slayer a button that read "Life, Liberty, and the Happiness of Pursuit", which is pretty much his motto. We discovered that
redkendrad has a real gift for nicknames. She dubbed him "Sir Kiss-A-Lot", which later changed to "Sir Marks-A-Lot" after he had a few more drinks.
She also dubbed Breena "Spider-Monkey Baby" because she is at that stage where she is all elbows, knees, and wiggles. We were hanging out in the room prior to garbing up for the evening, and Breena was wearing Kendra's "Wench" babydoll-T as a long dress and carrying her goblet. I pity her parents in about 14 years….

Saturday night at Marcon means only one thing - Barfleet! This time they had 6 rooms scattered through one end of the 5th floor - some with music, some with smoking, some with dancing, and all with bars. I got dragged into a shot-fest of "Yukon Torpedoes" - Yukon Jack, Permafrost, and Everclear. I did what any clever Wench would do in such circumstances - poured half of it on the floor while no one was looking. Boys who are trying to get you drunk are SO unobservant….Had some yummy drinks, hung out with some fun people, CENSORED, and was gallantly though unnecessarily escorted back to my room.
Slept in on Sunday till almost 11, and then went wandering. Brekkies in the Green Room. I have to say that Marcon treats it's guests very well - even the second-tier ones like me. There is Real Food in the green room - cheese, veggies, bagels, etc in addition to the usual snackies and drinks. I usually go for one real meal per day in the food court, but can otherwise keep myself going quite well from the green room.
Made sure to give feedback on the Masquerade to some of the ConCom, and also had a chance to chat with some more of the masquerade contestants. I've already been asked to run a Presentation panel for next year. But mostly Sunday at a con is for wandering blearily around and hugging people. Spent some quality time in the ConSuite with
ladyariyana and family, and saw the KY boys off.
They are really pushing me to come down to ConGlom again - they are throwing a Guilty Pleasures party - and even offered to chip in for my airfare, but it's not gonna be a matter of money but of time. My lease is up 9/1 and I have a Labor Day Weekend gig in IA, so I'm not sure how things will play out. They offered me crash space, which will help. Actually, Beer-Slayer asked if I was willing to share a bed. My response "It depends on with whom. Do I get to pick?". He laughed and offered to arrange a kilted line-up for me ;)
Caught the 4:00 shuttle to the airport and headed home - got home 7:15 Central time and crawled under the AC. Napped most of Monday, and did grocery shopping. I suppose I need to get unpacked at some point. Duckon is in less than 2 weeks…..

Date: 2006-06-01 03:02 am (UTC)Sounds like Marcon has changed some since I was last at one. I still occasionally tell the "Keep the curtains open" story.
