well, I've been in the office all week, but not exactly working. With all my managers out of town and the techs on a full schedule, my primary job was just to be there in case anything went wrong. There were a couple of useful moments, but really I've not done more than an hour worth of work on any given day.

So what did I do?
  • I finished reading "The Tudor Tailor".
  • I adapted a bodice that fit me into a kirtle bodice pattern and cut out a couple of interlinings and one body in the black wool I got courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] rennie_frog.
  • I scaled up the Folkwear Bolivian Milkmaid's Jacket pattern and cut it out of more black wool and accents of a tapestry sample I've had for a while.
  • I watched all three LOTR movies with the director/writers commentary.
  • I caught up on reading[livejournal.com profile] customers_suck and [livejournal.com profile] mock_the_stupid

Not bad for a couple of very slow days. :)

Each evening I his a couple of stores looking for after-Christmas bargains. Usually I can get some nice 50% off lotion or bath-goop gift sets, but there seemed to be fewer about this year. I did get a half-price pedicure set (creme, masque, callus-remover, and foot-scrub, plus a callus-file) and a $.99 little eye-shadow-thingie.

Pepper is definitely feeling better. She has learned that she can hop up on to the open oven door, and tonight not only pulled down a cannister of loose tea but got the lid off with her teeth! Luckily I heard the noise and got it away from her - not that it's necessarily bad for her but the last thing I need is a caffeinated bunny! I got her a willow ball from Pier One which seems to be a big hit so far - good for nibbling, tossing, and banging about. I'm glad that she is healthy, but she was certainly a lot easier to deal with when she wasn't feeling well....

My efforts continue to try to return/exchange the Ginormous Irish Sweater of Doom. I may have found another and more recently updated website for the maker, so we shall see. Also it turns out that at least one package disappeared - some Burts Bees stuff from my brother. Fed Ex delivered it to my home address at 12:10pm on 12/13 but claim that a signature was not required. I have no idea who they actually handed it to but I certainly never got it. The only reason I know about it is that the company sent the invoice to my brother's name at my address and I accidentally opened it and glimpsed the first couple of lines before I realized what it was. I wish he had asked me before shipping anything - my building lobby only locks on the inner door - anyone can wander in and if it's not locked in a mailbox it's not secure. Shipping to my office is a MUCH better bet for anything larger than my mailbox. Usually if it's mail I can go pick it up at the post office but not always - When I went to the local office they couldn't find my box from the DVD club and now it seems to have been returned to sender.

Ohh, I love the Folkwear Bolivian Milkmaid's Jacket pattern; I've used it for all sorts of things that look nothing like the original patter. I love it so much that I've worn out two of them...

Sorry about the lost package; what a bummer!

I've always liked the look but just hadn't gotten round to actually getting it and playing with it. I'm going to try one like the pattern first, but I can already see some possibilities. This one is going to be black wool lined in olive dupioni and the godets, flaps and cuffs are a lovely olive/black/gold tapestry - all from my stash.

We had some problems with packages going astray this holiday season -- another building with only inner-door locking. Combine that with a persistent inability of our UPS drivers to distinguish between 6440 and 6460, despite telephone calls to the central branch. One of our neighbors even posted a notice saying "a report has been filed with the police" regarding his missing boxes.

Christmas Eve we heard a news story about a ring of thieves who would drive around following UPS trucks and stealing boxes they dropped off. The Chicago cops had busted that group, but undoubtedly there were others.

Our "fix" for the problem was to have all packages delivered to my workplace. Not ideal, but better than trying to track down strays. Yet another example of the kind of human behavior that has me wanting to wait in my apartment hallway with a good book and a baseball bat on days when packages are due...

My default address for my Amazon gift list was my office address.
My mother asked me where to send stuff and I told her my office address.
My brother sent stuff to my home anyway.
Sigh.
