Fishies go pook pook

Well we didn't actually hear any of them but I am informed that they do.

Today jfc013 and I went down to the Shedd for some quality fishtimes. She is a member, so we were able to dodge the totally insane lines and just go in. I had not been since the most recent update, so I was very interested in the Wild Reef exhibit. The shark tank area is immensely cool. I had quite a few sharks pass within 6" of me, and I was very glad that at least 4" of that was glass!

It's so funny when I go to a museum or something like that - I'm totally into whatever it is that i'm seeing, so I was down on the floor looking thru the clear part to see the ray tank - then I realize that I'm the only person over the age of 8 who is doing this. I guess stuff stops being cool for most people - how boring!

The other thing I have a constant urge to do at an institution like this is to just go down the aisle slapping the stupid people. The ones who stand by the dogfish tank and go "they don't look like dogs!", or the ones who don't bother to read the display they are standing in front of. Dude, if you're not interested in learning stuff about the animals, they STAY HOME!!!!

But the baby beluga was adorable. We happened in there at feeding/enrichment time, so we had a great view. They train them to do a lot of behaviors that make it easier to take care of them - getting them to hold still on their sides and hold up a flipper for a blood sample, for example. So when mom did that, little Bella did the same thing - not for as long and she didn't really get the flipper up high enough, but she was obviously imitating her mama! She is still nursing - I think we saw her get a drink - but as they were rewarding mama's behaviors you could clearly see her thinking "I think I'd like a fish too".

There was heavy fog on the lake all day - it was kind of fun when we got there because we could see the tops of the buildings but not the bottoms. By the time we had lunch the windows were pretty much blank white - you couldn't see any of the buildings and Navy Pier was missing.

Took the bus and train home and nobunny seems to have killed each other while I was gone. Tonight is more separate playtime - going from one to the other so I smell like both of them but they still can't see each other. I also need to give Frisco a nail trim. That should be interesting.....
