VA Tech shooting

My heart goes out to anyone associated with this incident. It's horrible.

But I just saw highlites from the press conference, and I just want to smack some of the reporters. They kept asking the same questions with different wording, while the university people kept replying "We don't know yet" and the police reps kept saying either "we don't know yet" or "We're not prepared to release that yet".

I know people desperately want answers in this situation, but it's been what - 5 hours? They are still notifying next of kin and interviewing some pretty traumatized students. They'll release what they have when they are sure. Shut up and let them do their jobs!

People suck sometimes.

"People suck sometimes."

Yeah. Shame on the mass media for fostering some of these tactics and the people who watch these antics for supporting them.

Yeah - cuz these guys are already stressed and they KNOW that if they release anything they aren't 110% sure about they are going to get crucified. So they are making bloody sure they know stuff before they release it.

A buddy of mine is a Va. Tech. alumni. I'm wondering how he's doing today.

I know a bunch of people in the area (mostly from MD faire) and they are all thinking back to who they know. So sad :(

too true. I don't have any direct ties, but I am just certain that I'll know a whole bunch of 'friend ofs'

What's got me the most upset is the general categorization of the 'first' shooting as domestic. That's it. No further or real information.

Well, they don't HAVE any further or real information.

According to what little of the press conf I could stand (before I turned it off in disgust) was that they THOUGHT they had a simple "domestic" incident with the first shootings.

They were proceeding on that assumption (They said they believed that the perp had left the campus and had possibly left the state) when the second incident started. So half of what they thought they had in the way of info now needs to be re-evaluated. It sounds ridiculous that they could be two separate incidents but it is possible and they also need to sort that out as well.

What they need to be doing now is gathering evidence and piecing it together, notifying next of kin, and getting counseling for the survivors. As far as I can tell that is what they are doing, and I have no problem with that. We'll have more and concrete info starting tomorrow.

*hugs*

At the later press conference a more intelligent reporter asked if the dead gunman matched the description of the 'person of interest' from the first shooting. The answer was 'No'. So its quite possible it is two separate incidents.
