I need to read those books. I remember the boys were reading them in 8th grade. The teachers never recommended them to the girls...even if the girls happened to be reading fantasy too. Hmpf. Also, the author sounds awesome, and I'm sorry her work had to be torn to itty bitty bits.
I find it ironic that the decision to make Will American was so that he would be different than Harry Potter, but then they re-cast his family as indifferent or bullying, just like, er, Harry Potter! As Kermit would put it,"What the Hey?"
BTW, does anyone remember a TV mini-series allegedly based on Ursula LeGuin's "Earthsea" books? I heard that the adaptation had little in common with the actual stories and that Ms. LeGuin hated the adaptation and said so in no uncertain terms. Looks like we may be hearing something similar from Ms. Cooper.
I've loved 'The Dark Is Rising' since I first read it when I was in college. They may be 'children's books', but they are the same kind of 'children's books' as Harry Potter. I was originally interested in seeing the film because I really like both Chris Eccleston and Ian McShane, but geez, if McShane couldn't even be bothered to read the books, I'm all kinds of scared as to what the end product is like.
I sumnmarize the lovely and talented Cleolinda when I say "for those who simply cannot resist the siren call of Christopher Eccleston, please resist for a week. Just enough that this travesty does stunningly awful box office opening weekend"
I had not paid much attention to the movie and have never read the books. Now though after reading the article and a bit of the excerpt I am going to hunt them down and read them! :) Can't wait!
