Pics from the Star Wars Exhibit

wendyzskiThat goofy picture I posted yesterday was when many of the people from the Galaxy Rangers (the dwindling revenants of the NU Scienfce Fiction Club) went to the Museum of Science and Industry for the "Star Wars - Where Science Meets Imagination" Exhibit.
The gist of the exhibit was to show original props and costumes from the movies and to link them to real-world science and technology. There was one of the original Landspeeders with a video about hovercrafts and an opportunity to drive one. (Sadly, my picture of the landspeeder did NOT come out - did any of you get a good one?). Props and costumes from Hoth, for example, were displayed along with clothing worn by scientists today in Antarctica, and a video with scenes of both and how they show how people and technology have to be adapted for cold climates. A full scale model of the Hoth probe droid was next to a vid on how the military is currently working on remote sensor equipment. Pretty cool. But on to the pictures!!!

Fun fact about that last one - the Star Destroyer. How many of you remember when L'eggs pantyhose actually came in a plastic egg? Now look again closely at the rear engines....:)

I always thought about making this outfit for a hall costume - it looks interesting but very comfy.

Interrogation droid from Ep 4. Most of us agreed that this thing scared the shit out of us when we saw the film!
There were a wide variety of nifty and strange things in the gift shop - I got a set of 5 mini spaceship holiday ornaments and a lapel pin. I skipped the "Light-Up Musical Darth Vader Giant Pez Dispenser", as well as the Darth Vader in a santa hat snowglobe (though the "list" he was checking had the names of Star Wars characters on it with the "good guys" crossed out. :)). There were also mini ornaments with characters or heads floating in them. Yoda looked pretty comfy on his little scooter-thingie, but the Chewbacca one really looked like someone had lopped his head off and stuck it in a bottle. Ick.
There were Star Wars references in many other places in the museum. Check out the rather odd babysitter in the Chick Hatchery:
We also did a lot of the otehr exhibits. Here is a list of safety signs from the Toymaker 3000 exhibit, some of which are pretty funny
And here are john and jake presenting a rather interesting weather forecast....
The museum also has a whole area of holiday trees with ornaments from or representing various countries. The British one had ornaments shaped like biscuits and teacups, and some recipes. This one looked yummy.
It was a lot of fun but by feet definitely hurt by the time we were done!
