Nothing to do with JavaScript. Everything to do with how mail is handled and delivered. This is why all of my mail accounts are POP-based, rather than web-based.
I have a smart geek hubby; when I set up my Gmail account, he set it for no forwarding, POP and IMAP all disabled. That's really all you need to do. All the filters do is give different files for the emails, at least that's my impression.
It pays to have a professional security person look over your settings and accounts if you've a lot to lose in either email accounts or web-sites.

No filters in use, on any account. Let me guess, yet another security hole that wouldn't be there if javascript wasn't used?

But I wanted to help spread the word, in case anyone I know is affected.

It is good to know and I will pass it on. Unfortunately, it is not just GMail that this can happen to.
