wendyzski: (running of the stupid)

OK - I have a costume recreation I'd like to do for Marcon, so I was trying to grab screencaps from a DVD to use for reference and documentation. I've never done this before, and I think I'm missing something obvious.

I have a Dell Laptop with a DVD-RW drive and windows XP.

Using "printscreen" and pasting to save in a variety of picture formats gives me a bunch of pictures of the DVD software frame with nothing inside. I've tried using PowerDVD and Windows Medial Player 11, using print screen and trying to paste into Photoshop 5.5, Microsoft Publisher - save picture and trying to export to a variety of formats(which appears OK on the screen but then reopening the file later shows the same frame), or exporting it as html and then opening in a browser. None of them seem to work.

I'm going to be a panelist but NOT judging this time around, so I'd like to acquit myself well, and it's a fairly obscure character/costume so I NEED the documentation. Help?

You can't capture from a DVD player that way, "printscreen" doesn't work like that. The video from the DVD is 'overlaid' on top of the player window, so printscreen doesn't see it. PowerDVD should have a capture function, and you might be able to use Ctrl-I in Windows Media Player to save the image.

Nero burning app *might* have a utility. Window Movie maker *should* have a utility.
Talk to me if you need Nero.

For Windows Media Player, go to Options - Performance tab then set the video acceleration to None and hit apply. You should then be able to capture the screen (tip: pausing the video helps).
