I tried to follow my own advice last night and archive this journal.
However, since I've apparently been babbling here since 2002, it locked up and told me I had to auto convert some old entries. Except that my settings were SO out of date that I couldn't find the screen that would let me do this and the Help files were amazingly unhelpful.
After some frustration I thought maybe LJBook would help. It was all jammed up by people panicking, so it didn't run, but it DID lock up and give me the same error message but helpfully included a link to where I could update my encoding settings.
So I re-encoded my LJ, then was able to run LJArchive and parse my entire LJ to my keychain (thumb drive).
While I was poking about I also discovered that my other settings were so old as to be unsupported as well, so I had to change my "Theme". I miss my old one - it was simple, easy to read, and looked like the entries were written in an old-fashioned spiral-bound notebook. It was really hard to find somethign that was uncluttered, readable, and put userpics on each entry and on the left side (which is how I was used to seeing them). I am a very visual learner, and my brain keys in on the userpics before it registers the journal name, so this way I can still tell whose posts I'm reading. (Of course, when two people I know use the same pic it confuses me no end, but that doesn't happen too often). Oh and of course it had to be free, because I'm still one of those people who signed on back when you needed in invite code to come on board (Thanks
capi!), and still has a free account with no ads and 6 userpics.
I'm still not convinced there is any reason to panic (Other than the fact that apparently most of the people in LJ-land seem to enjoy panicking), but as I said yesterday - backups are never a bad idea.

Date: 2009-01-07 05:39 pm (UTC)And how, Miz Wendy, would i relocate YOU, should that happen?
Not sayin' it WILL happen, but... this here is a WHAT IF scenario. I'm feeling MUCH more secure now, with the InsaneJournal (fitting, eh?) under my belt, especially, as i said, since it seems to be so incredibly similar to LJ. Even so, you are very dear to me, luv. Amazing how many people have crept into my heart... and are so far away and connected to me only via... LJ, now.
LOTS of others have slipped away, since AFR busted up, basically. Haven't seen nor heard a peep from Kevin Gosh of Pewter in years. People like that, y'know? *sigh* Too easy to lose folks.

Date: 2009-01-08 01:53 am (UTC)But I figured that in the case of a stray meteor or something, that backing up was a good thing in general.
I has your e-mail and know where to find you!

Date: 2009-01-08 01:47 am (UTC)I have to admit, I don't read the business posts. If something important happens, it is 90% certain that *somebody* on my FL, will say something. Particularly if it affects the fic writers. talk about enjoying the panic.

Date: 2009-01-08 01:49 am (UTC)That's why I posted the info. Saw it a couple of places and figured I'd put "look - this is going on, who knows what the hell it is, but if you're worried here are some tools".
