I think I have figured out the cause of Pepper's random 2-4AM thumpfests. She will be in the kitchen and will runrunrunrun-skid-runrun under the bed and then THUMP for about 5 minutes. Clearly something was startling her.

Today I saw a mouse run under the dishwasher.

That would explain things.

Anyone have a cat I can borrow?

"Monsters! Monsters under the appliances, Mommy!"

Perhaps she's thumping in Morse code?

This has been going on since shortly after I moved in and I could NOT figure out what was setting her off. This explains much.

It's amazing what lengths they go to trying to communicate with us.

One of my cats would likely LOVE to help with your little problem, but unfortunately we're far away and she'd go after Pepper too...

Sugar Puff would Say: That mouse in INDOORS, and therefore NOT MY PROBLEM - until I am peckish...

Cornflake would say: Mmmm! Bunneh fer dinnah!

Pepper weights 6.5 lbs and tried to beat up the neighbor's chihuahua.
My money's on the bunny.

Me, I love bunnies. A house bunny would be fun, but...

Cornflake is 10lbs of muscle and has had bunnies the size of his sister (just over 6lbs) on several occasions, plus rats, birds (including pigeons!), mice, voles, and even moles! He will pogo six feet in the air or jump off the shed roof to catch birds on the wing.

Indoors, an affectionate cushion. Outside, a hard wired hunter! Garden tiger, for sure. Luckily these two eat most of their prey. We usually only get to see the green wobbly bit they leave...

Chihuahua? Mid morning snack... ;)

Knowing how my little 5.5lb trixie (bunny) used to chase the formerly 15 pound Vivianne (kitty) around the room, I have no doubt Pepper would put up a hell of a fight with a cat. :)

Jazzi would come and take care of Miss Mousie for you. And she's bunny-safe. Problem is, you'd also get a vacation in the hospital, most-expenses paid by your insurance.

THUMP "DANGER, Momma Robinson, DANGER!"

THUMP "INVASION!"

THUMP "Just what do I have to do to get some ACTION around here?" THUMP

mouse is in kitchen. kitchen has easily washable tile floor and no upholstery. kitty eats mouse, kitty goes home, human mops floor a couple of times - no problem.

Fezzik (the new kitty) is a great mouser. Unfortunately, he brings them to me. On my pillow. In my bed. I HATE MICE!
I think the word has gotten out in the mouse kingdom that the house with 4 cats in it is NOT a good place to try to move in! Haven't seen one for at least 3 weeks.

I have yet to see mice in my house.

I've seen them outside in my backyard, though.

I suppose the fact that this house used to have two cats (and still has one, even though the mouser is the one who passed away) could have something to do with that.

Of course at one point the house had four rabbits (and now has two) in it, so the mice could just be confused...

I have four cats (two of whom ignore our bunny, two of whom are friends with our bunny)... you will not be surprised to know that they mice never seem want to try for the actual house and are content to remain in the garage.
