I have a MS Word 2003 document that I simply cannot get the page numbers to work out! It's the first time I've ever worked with sections and a table of contents, and they seem okay - except for the page numbering thing.
It was an old document with leftover legacy formatting but I went back and cleared the old formatting and redid everything using header styles. Now the TOC has all the right stuff on it, but everything says it's on page 1 except for page 1 which says it's page 3 (which technically it is as the cover is 1 and the TOC is 2)
Researching into the topic just has me more confused. Can anyone explain it to me in simple words, or is there anyone I can send it to for a quick fix? I need to be able to put in and take out sections from here going forward so I really do have to get this working properly instead of using a workaround because it will only get worse as time goes on.
Anyone? Halp?

That gets rid of all the old formatting that you can never be sure you got rid of.
Then paste into a shiny new unformatted document in your current word processor.
Of course you will have to go back in and format all the text. but It will work the way you expect.
