Good Vibrations

Riding the CTA during rush hour during the winter is like a big squishy game of Tetris.
Except a little smellier.

Well, I've been here a whole week and I still love this job. I'm not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination, but it's getting so that my favorite part of the day is early in the morning when I first come in. I make the coffee and set up the kitchen for the day, and then I have some time with my cup of green tea where I can just sit and listen to this wonderful old building slowly wake up as people wander in. I can stand by the fireplace and look out the window while my computer boots up, and it's really a nice moment.

My boss tells me that we have a ghost in the building. They think she's female, and she has a thing about keys. She will steal keys, move keys - even take a key off the ring and leave the rest behind. No real harm, but it's happened to her and to a couple of the tenants over the years. Of course my first thought was "I wonder if she thinks she's looking for her keys?" After all, why does someone pick up a set of keys that aren't their own? Usually because they think they ARE their own. So if anyone has any old-looking or old fashioned keys lying around, or if you see some cheap ones at a flea market or something, let me know. I plan to make a small set and then "give" them to her. Maybe it will help, maybe not - but it might make her happy, which is the point.

As my manager was taking me to the third property last week to meet the other manager, she said "Now, she's a real character". I smiled and said "You collect us, don't you?" She laughed, and admitted that it might be so. Linda at Courthouse has no volume control - When my manager asked my opinion of her, I replied that it was not often that I met someone louder than me. I, of course, never shut up. And Ellen at Theatre Disctrict doesn't just talk with her hands, she talks with her ARMS! I'm pondering the need for a hard-hat at team meetings, because I kept reflexively ducking as she explained things to me. And my manager herself is a tremendous Type A personality, but that's fine - someone has to be. She doesn't seem the kind to take it out on anyone - just the kind that I need to keep bringing back things she's left behind (phones, coffee cups) and probably needs to be reminded to eat on occasion. She's also very touchy - as in she likes to touch people a lot. I will need to get used to that, as that's so very opposite the way I am with most people.

Today I'm "on my own" although I've beenin contact with her by e-mail, like when I had a situation with one office thermostat that went belly-up this morning. At first the tenants decamped to Starbucks, but after an hour or so when it was clear that it was going to be a while to get a tech over here, I put them in the large conference room so they had a warm place to work.

Later today I go to meet the Important People at the corporate offices. For the moment (once I finish my lunch) I'm re-organizing the storage closet - mostly so that I know what-all we have in there, but also so that it makes sense to me. My manager will just have to get used to looking down to MY eye level for things. :) Apparently these spaces have the occasional vanishing teant who just skips the space. So we have "inherited" rather a lot of office supplies from them. At least that was her explanation when I asked why on earth I have 71 boxes of paper clips...

I have a couple of old fashioned keys I could give you. LJ PM me your mailing info and I'll try to send them out in the next few days.

You could decorate the office tree with ornaments made from old keys and paperclip garlands.
