A party of one
Sep. 1st, 2004 07:15 pmLike many people, I am not so much "pro-Kerry" as I am "anti-Bush". I suspect that I would vote for a gerbil if I thought it had the best chance to put Bush out of office.
I am a registered Democrat. Partly because as a general rule they stand for more of the things I believe in, but also because I live in Chicago and you don't get to vote for anything of any importance unless you are a Democrat. All of the action around here takes place in the primaries.
I am pro-choice, pro gay-marriage, pro-equal-rights-for-pretty-much-everybody, pro-NEA, anti-gun-control, and a believer in the right to privacy and the separation of church and state. I believe that if I support people's right to express themselves, then I have to allow that even for people I don't like, disagree with, or find just plain squicky. I feel bad for the plight of illegal immigrants but I still don't think they should have the same rights to government programs as legal ones or citizens. I believe that if you want to live in the US, you should have a basic working use of English - Celebrate who you are and where you come from, but don't expect me to pay to teach your children in a language that will make it that much harder for them to get along. If I had any confidence in our legal system I'd be in favor of the death penalty, but doing in someone who is innocent is not a chance I am willing to take. I think we should legalize marijuana and other drugs, then tax the heck out of them to pay for treatment and support programs, just like I think prostitution should be legalized and unionized.
So there. Pbbbbbth!
