The "control" group is mostly in my head. I have been getting these 2-5 times a year for decades now. Things I have learned include: 1) going to the doctor as soon as I get the "cough I can taste". 2) cranking the humidity and getting horizontal as quickly as possible 3) once the fever goes down slowly getting vertical to get the goo out 4) taking all my meds for as long as I have to 5) listening to my body
Sometimes I wonder what it might be like to have a real functioning immune system, but as I've not had one since at least 1988 it's sort of a moot point. (Did Janet every tell you WHY this happens to me? I had what they now call CFIDS)
I won't lie - if there hadn't been the CD stuff to do on top of the work stuff I'd have let it slide. But both was stressing me out so much that it seemed a reasonable tradeoff to push myself in order to know that it is DONE DONE DONE!!!
I will do my shifts at the Maritime Fest tomorrow, but am not sure that i will last until performing in the finale in the evening concert. See - I'm even considering giving up STAGE TIME to recover - aren't I being all smart and stuff?
Either you or Janet did talk to me about the CFIDS thing at some point, though not in great detail. I think it's reasonably likely it was you. Also, I think there's generally some debate among your commenters regarding point 5, which is why I asked this in the first place. It occasionally appears that you're listening to your body but not actually doing what it tells you. This is actually understandable, in the sense that people who rarely get sick tend to take being sick enough to notice fairly seriously, but if you actually did rest all the time that you were seriously ill, that's a fair amount of time to be writing off. A week every year or more is different from a week every few months. In other words, I figure that given that you've somehow managed to avoid killing yourself off so far, I/we probably worry about you too much. Expecting this to change my reactions to things is probably overly optimistic.
On the other hand, if you're considering giving up stage time, it's obviously worse than I thought it was. :-)
