But she did get conscripted!

I was peering thru the Capricon list of programming, on the off-change that there woudl be something I wanted to actually go do. I noticed that [livejournal.com profile] seamstrix was listed as doing a panel on "Creative Costuming". Those of you who read her LJ know that she left for England 2 days ago.

So I tossed off an e-mail to this effect to the head of Programming (Bernie) and she sent back "oops - guess that's why I hadn't heard from her. Do you want to do it? We have an awesome green room..."

(NOTE - this will be the first time I have done a panel at Cap, mostly because of their absurd comp membership policy. Most cons will comp you if you do 3 panels or more, but Cap will not. I refuse to pay for the privilege of working for a con. They can have cash, or labor - not both. But this time I get green room access for a very limited amount of work, so I think that's fair. I've already paid my membership)

So I'm doing a panel at Cap. 1 hour's work plus prep time for my weekend nutritional needs isn't a bad trade-off. Saturday 2-3. Be there and listen to me babble.

*tries to figure out what should be on a handout about 'Creative Costuming'*

maybe thats why I don't do many cons, I'm too cheap(broke) to give them cash, and very few people care to hear what I have to say. I'd love to do more but with travel and hotel costs I can't justify the price of admision and not being known well enough to be considered knowlegeable on subjects related I'm kindof screwed.

That being said here's the comercial part of my reply this year I'll be speaking again at Notacon (http://notacon.org/) in April it's cool if your a social geek.

Chicago cons have historically given short shrift to programming - it seems to be an afterthought. I've gotten e-mails a week before the con asking if I can do panels, and they seem surprised when I say NO!

(This is different - it's bailing a friend out of a hard place, and not too much trouble on my part. Looks like about an hour of prep time, most of which will be searching for display samples, plus an hour at the con)

Marcon is a faboo con for programming. They are over Memorial Day weekend, and I always get a list of suggesed panel topics in January. I send it back with a list of what I'd like to be on, why I'm suited for it, and how many I'm willing to do. I know a month beforehand what I'll be on, and everything onsite is handled very well. Marcon also has enough of a range of programming that I'm NOT just talking about costuming. Last year I was on a Teen panel of "Why are vampires so popular?", and this year I hope to be on "Legacy of Lovecraft".

From one foolish enough to have helped run a chicago area con - yes, programming is an after-thought, particularly for Capricon. They are more concerned with having parties each night. Oh, and having a good joke track. The sad thing is, often the joke track is more interesting than the real tracks. I stopped going to programming in Chicago a long time ago. Very little in the offing. Every once in a great while there will be a program that draws me in.

It certainly was the year I ran it. We (Moebius at the time) actually produced the Phineas Tyler B track. Eash panel was a character-improv. We had the "Bad Writer's Workshop". "Millenium Jeopardy" (I'll take 'black helicopters' for $200, Alex), a "How to take over the World" panel starring a brain in a jar, The Brain, Ming the Merciless, the Doctor, and some guy named bill. 10 panels total - it was hilarious.

If MarCon is over Memorial Day weekend, I guess that means you won't be going to CostumeCon 24 that weekend in Des Moines?

Right. I thought hard about it, but Marcon has been very good to me over the years, so I'm supporting them. The ICG hasn't done anything for me lately. Plus, 07 is in St. Louis....

I'm pondering CostumeCon, but I'm not sure I'll know anyone there - though I strongly suspect a LOT of folks will recognize me. :-)

Good luck. Keep a lookout for us if you get a chance? I don't know where I'll be other than attending the Firefly party tomorrow night.

Friday night I'll be in velvet - blue panne shirt, green panne leotard, and black skirt.

Saturday I'll be in a green blouse, black skirts, and a gold.black brocade corset.

You gonna get hubby in leather or vinyl? (hubba hubba)
